Knockainey Green Schools

Green Schools Flag

Knockainey National School has been involved in the Green School Programme for approximately 10 years, with the whole school community dedicated to making our school and grounds a beautiful and environmentally friendly place to learn. We have successfully been rewarded the Litter and Waste, Energy, Water and Transport flags. Each flag takes two years to complete and this year we are currently in our second year working on the Biodiversity flag. We hope to submit our completed application at the end of school year 2020-2021, with the possibility of being rewarded our fifth flag before the end of June.

The theme of Biodiversity hopes to increase pupil’s awareness of the flora and fauna within our local environment, whilst making pupils aware of the dangers to and impact daily living has on ecosystems within national and international environments. Pupils will aim to improve biodiversity within the school grounds through the creation of a bug hotel, planting of trees, shrubs and flowers. They will complete scavenger hunts, observe and identify common Irish Garden birds and insects and complete biodiversity awareness surveys, whilst learning about the many habitats and ecosystems which are in our local environment. The Green School Committee is usually made up of 7 class representatives. Mrs. Conway, Mrs.Davern, Niall Malone (Caretaker), Therese Lynch and Elaine Teahan (Parent Representatives), however this year due to Covid-19 restrictions a special honorary role is given to each and every pupil and adult of our school. More than ever we need to work together to keep each other and the world around us safe. We look forward to our action week at the end of March 2021 and will keep you all up to date on our progress and on our application for the Biodiversity flag for K.N.S.
