Cycling Certificates

Recently the fifth and sixth class took part in cycling lessons. They learned how to cycle correctly on the road, obey road signs, use the correct hand signals and many other important skills. On the last day of the cycling lessons the boys and girls put these skills into use when they cycled on the roads around Knockainey village. The pupils also received a certificate after they had completed the lessons.

Liam Mac Carthy Cup

On 29/11/2018 we were delighted to welcome the Liam Mac Carthy Cup to our School here in Knockainey. The Children, Staff and Parents were thrilled to be part of this day.

We were privileged to be joined on the day by Darragh O’Donovan and Pat Ryan from Doon who were members of the All-Ireland Winning Team. They gave some great advice to our hurling enthusiasts.

Also on the day we were joined by local Special Olympian Brendan Cronin who raised our Active Flag that we achieved last year. We were also joined by some of our Active Flag committee Josh Hartnett and Michael Leo. Bríd Keane (committee member) gave us a synopsis of the events we achieved last year that highlighted to all, the hard work and dedication that went into achieving this flag. Thanks to all involved.

Finally, we thank all those parents who contributed to home baking and to the Parents Association members who were present on the day to help with tea, coffee and refreshments.

FMS Hurling Kit

Knockainey National School would like to extend great thanks and appreciation to both Joe Wheeler of Wheeler Auctioneers and Knockainey GAA Juvenile Club for Sponsoring our school with an FMS Huring Kit.

The kit is used with all our classes and proves a great resource in developing each child’s functional movement skills whilst using a hurley.

We have seen how well the children enjoy using the equipment and no doubt will help in the budding of some new stars.

Athletics

On Wednesday 17th of October our athletics team headed to Limerick racecourse to take part in the Co. Limerick primary schools athletics competition. This event is held every year and always has a large number of participants. This year was no different with a large number of children taking part. Every member of our athletics team performed very well on the day. A big well done to Sam Mitchell who won a bronze medal when he came third in the U9 boy’s race. A special word of thanks to Cherry Joy O’ Regan and Ms. Donworth for all their hard work in preparing for this event. The following are the children who ran on the day.
Jake Madden, Thomas Stritch, Zoe Gubbins, Emma O’ Reilly, Leanne Stritch, Kate Egan, Sienna Gorski, Lorcan Dalton, Liam Boyle, Sam Mitchell, Diarmuid Burke, Eoghan Clancy, Robert Joy O’ Regan, Julie Boyle, Ronan O’ Brien.

A Pupils Perspective:
It was a special Wednesday morning as it was the morning of the cross country run. Fifteen students represented our school at the competition. At about half past nine we set off in a mini bus to Limerick racecourse. We were full of excitement and anticipation. It was a clear sunny day in October. There was lots of schools there from all over Limerick. When we arrived we walked over to the course to put our bags down and change. We did a couple of warm ups before our races. Finally it was time for the races to begin. The age groups were U8, U9, U10, U11 and U12. We were very proud of Sam Mitchell who brought home a bronze medal for our school.
At around a quarter to one we headed home on the bus. I had a WONDERFUL DAY!
Julie Boyle.

Cycle Right with John Clancy

On the 13th of September Mr. John Clancy began cycling lessons with the pupils of 5th and 6th class. This initiative is part funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and also An Taisce. It helps to improve pupils cycling abilities whilst also making them a competent and safer cyclist on the road. This cycling awareness training course will be carried out over the duration of 6 weeks and will involve both practical and theory lessons. Remember cycling is a method of sustainable transport, thus lessening our carbon footprint. It is also good for the mind and body. So everybody get cycling.
